About the Author

Charlotte's Web was written by E.B. White. E.B. stands for Elwyn Brooks, but since White never liked the name, he published his writing under the name E.B. White was born in New York in 1899 and attended Cornell University. After graduating, he began write for The New Yorker. Here, he met his wife Katharine, who also wrote for the magazine.

White spent most of his time on his family's farm in Maine. One day, he saw a black spider in the barn, and claims that this was his inspiration for Charlotte's Web. Much of the material in Charlotte's Web was based of his real-life experiences. White tried to make the animals seem as real as possible, so he wanted to make sure that he wrote about how messy Wilbur was and how predatory Charlotte was.

E.B. White is best known for Charlotte's Web and Stuart Little. These children's books have both been adapted into movies. He died in 1985.
